Lost/Deleted Emails Recovery

If you have accidentally deleted or lost some important emails in Gmail, there are ways to recover them. Gmail has a feature called "Trash," where deleted emails are stored temporarily. Additionally, Gmail also provides an option to recover permanently deleted emails within a limited time frame. In case of lost emails, one can also try searching for them using filters or contacting Gmail support for assistance.

Causes

  • Accidental deletion by the user
  • Automatic deletion by filters or spam settings
  • Hacking or unauthorized access to the account
  • Technical issues with the Gmail server or client
  • Corruption or damage to email files
  • Failure to sync properly with other devices or email clients
  • Storage limit exceeded, causing deletion of older emails.

Solution 1: Check the Trash folder and move the deleted emails back to the inbox

  1. As your initial step, log in to your email account.
  2. Then, look for the Trash or Bin folder on the left-hand side panel of your inbox.
  3. Next, open the Trash folder and find the deleted email you want to recover.
  4. After that, check the box next to the email(s) you want to restore.
  5. Now, press the Move to button and select the inbox from the drop-down menu.
  6. Lastly, the selected email(s) will now be moved back to your inbox.

Solution 2: Check the Archive folder for manually archived emails

  1. First of all, open Gmail and log in to your account.
  2. On the left side of the screen, find and select the More option.
  3. Tap on the All Mail option to view all emails in your account, including archived ones.
  4. If you remember any keywords from the email you're looking for, type them in the search bar at the top.
  5. Once you locate the email you're looking for, open it.
  6. Press the Move to Inbox button at the top of the email to move it back to the inbox.

Solution 3: Search for missing emails using keywords or details

  1. First, open your email client and go to the search bar.
  2. Enter the keyword or specific details related to the missing email, such as the sender's name, date range, subject, or body text.
  3. After that, click the Enter key to start the search.
  4. If the email shows up in the search results, tap on it to open it.
  5. If you can't find it in the initial search results, refine your search by using advanced search options, such as specifying the folder to search in or excluding certain words.
  6. Once you locate the missing email, move it back to the inbox or any other folder as needed.

Solution 4: Check filters to prevent automatic deletion or movement of emails

  1. Firstly, open your email account and go to the settings.
  2. Next, tap on Filters and Blocked Addresses.
  3. Check for any filters that might be deleting or moving emails.
  4. To edit or delete the filter, click on Edit or Delete.
  5. If editing, uncheck the options that delete or move emails.
  6. If deleting, confirm the action by pressing hit the OK button.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

There is no way to recover if you have permanently deleted your emails from the Trash Bin or Google has deleted them automatically after 30 days. Initially, deleted emails are stored in the Trash Bin folder for 30 days.

If you have deleted emails from the Trash folder, they are permanently removed and cannot be recovered. Also, if you have clicked "Delete forever" while deleting them, then they won't show up in your Gmail account. It is recommended to leave emails in the Trash folder as they are automatically deleted after 30 days.

Gmail messages may be lost due to accidental deletion, moving, forwards, or filters. Forwarded emails can disappear if you're forwarding them to another address without realizing it. Check and delete unwanted forwarding addresses by going to Settings > Forwarding and POP/IMAP. Review your filter settings by going to Settings > Filters and Blocked Addresses.
