Yahoo! and online communications company Four11 made a deal to cobrand white pages in 1997. And with the deal of $ 96 million dollars, Yahoo! acquired the Four11. The Yahoo! company bought the Four11 because of its Rocketmail webmail service. After the acquisition, Yahoo! Mail was launched on October 8, 1997.

The Yahoo network was gradually redesigned in 2002. Also, the company website was also redesigned along with Yahoo Mail. Yahoo! acquired the webmail service Oddpost. Some of the prominent features of the Oddpost were drag-and-drop support, RSS feeds, right-click menus, increased speed to improve the response time, and a preview pane. The removed features were not being able to open multiple tabs, drag the mail to a folder, and sort by the sender's name. In the same year, its services faced a very serious problem as its one million users were unable to access their accounts. Marissa Mayer, then CEO of the company, apologized publicly to its users.

On April 18, 2013, China Yahoo! Mail announced that it was closing its services. Additionally, in 2014, various email usernames and accounts were disclosed to some users. Plus, The company believed there was a security breach that was due to any third-party website. To solve this problem, Yahoo contacted the affected users and told them to change their passwords.

The company again designed its website and improved mobile features. Additionally, with this design, it also added the Yahoo! Account Key, which was a smartphone-based replacement for password logins. The last design was done in 2020, which allowed users to watch NFL matches.
