History

Btinternet is part of the BT Group plc. Many privately owned telegraph companies, British and Irish Magnetic Telegraph Company, London District Telegraph Company, Electric Telegraph Company, and others, were operating in Britain. From 1846 onwards, Telegraph Act 1868 passed the control of all these companies. As a result, the GPO (General Post Office) Postal Telegraphs Department was formed.

After the invention of the telephone, it started to provide telephone services too. Its competitor National Telephone Company was acquired by the company in 1912. The British Telecom brand came into existence in 1980. Under the provisions of the British Telecommunications Act 1981, it became a state-owned independent corporation. Its trading name was changed to BT in 1991.

Its first channel BT Sport was launched in 2013. On 5 February 2015, the company acquired the EE for £12.5 billion. In 2017 The Daily Telegraph released a report that this company had called in consultants from McKinsey to do a review of its businesses. The goal of this review was to save large sums of money every year. As of 2021, Altice, a French telecommunications company, acquired a 12% stake in this company. In the same year, the stake was increased to 18%.
